With 48 nations replacing the old 32-team bracket, the World Cup 2026 group stage features 72 matches across 16 host cities. Each of the 12 groups plays a single round-robin (three matches per team). The top two qualify automatically, and the eight best third-placed teams round out a 32-team knockout phase — the largest in tournament history.
